Practice Management Tips

We all work hard – but the key differentiator lies in whether we work smart too! Efficiency can be defined as the state or quality of being able to accomplish something with the least waste of time and effort.

Outlined below are 5 practice management tips you increase efficiency and improve your medical practice.

  1. Delegate

As a physician, your priority is focusing on your patients.  Don’t spend time on doing tasks that can be done by someone else.  Delegate administrative tasks to your staff as much as possible.

  1. Handouts as Communication Tools

Handouts are a good communication tool.  By disseminating brochures and flyers with pertinent information, you can reduce the time spent in phone calls and follow-ups on certain common questions that patients may have.

  1. Scheduling System

Good scheduling does not only increase patient flow but also ensures productivity.  The 2017 Medscape Practice Workflow Report indicates that physicians usually fall behind on their appointments many times a week; almost 28% are behind schedule every day.  Choosing the appropriate scheduling system, specific to your practice needs, is imperative.

  1. Patient Reminders and Appointment Confirmation

The 2017 Medscape Practice Workflow Report revealed that 40% of physicians see between 11-20 patients a day.  Interestingly 72% physicians stated that in a week, about 10% or less of their appointments were no-shows.  No-shows are costly.  Ensure appointments are confirmed.  At times it may not be possible to do so for all appointments – but doing it for new patients or large blocked sessions will save time and resources.  Using the appointment confirmation call to remind patients to bring in their paperwork or other such information is a good idea.

  1. Hiring the right people

Ensure that the staff you hire are a good fit with your practice values and culture.  Internal issues can harm your team morale and create unnecessary negativity.
